Strathy Point.
Start. Totegan.
Route. Totegan - Lochan nam Faoileag - Strathy Point Lighthouse - Strathy Point - Totegan.
Notes. Get this, an important example of northern hard acidic rock cliffs subject to extreme wind and wave exposure, the headland provides a range of slopes, gullies and crevices, this basically means stunning coastal scenery for us to explore. Guarding this finger of northern Sutherland since 1958 the first electric lighthouse in Scotland, Strathy Point Lighthouse erected to fill a dark void in this ragged coast line.
Strathy is a crofting township scattered along the main road above a fine sandy beach, a single ribbon of tarmac leads to a small car park at Totegan, the walk started here. We passed through a gate continuing along the lane, now private, with tarmac to guide us we continued leaving the lane to visit a walled memorial above Toll Egan. The tarmac lane then guided us passed Lochan nam Faoileag terminating at the lighthouse, we detoured to the left of the buildings to soak up stunning views along the ragged edge where land meets sea.
We then passed to the right of the lighthouse our aiming point an airy ridge (not really airy at all) leading to the very tip of the peninsula, again the views were stunning. Once back across the ridge we ascended the low hill above Lochan nam Faoileag, passed a redundant lookout station, when high ground ended we crossed a large field to the tarmac lane, our guide back to the patiently waiting car.
